Over the last years, there is an increasing spread of Reading Clubs or Book Clubs.
This is due to the possibilities given for creative use of free time, developing social relationships and interaction among the members – mostly women who share a common love for reading.

Therefore, beginning with the book, the fruitful discussion, the opinion exchange which follow, the Book Club members sharpen their memory, practice their critical thought and develop their
business ability, as well.

At the same time, book elaboration becomes the reason of sharing individual experiences and speculations. Also, members get to know each other better and sincere and friendly relations are developed. Very often, various actions follow up, such as day trips, museum visits, attending theatrical plays and so on.

Reading books offers numerous benefits for seniors, fostering cognitive health, emotional well-being, and social connection. Engaging with literature helps keep the mind sharp by stimulating memory, improving concentration, and enhancing vocabulary. For seniors, reading also provides an escape, allowing them to explore new worlds, ideas, and perspectives, which can reduce stress
and combat feelings of isolation. Participating in a book club further amplifies these advantages by providing a sense of community and purpose. Socializing with fellow members encourages lively discussions, boosts self-esteem, and creates opportunities for building lasting friendships.
The shared experience of reading and discussing books allows seniors to stay intellectually active, stay informed, and feel more connected to others, improving their overall quality of life.

The Book Club of the Achaia Adult Education Institute will continue its work during 2024 – 2025 dynamically, because of the love for books shared among the members, since this is the reason for a warm, human connection.

The choice of literature style is historical and social novel and is adapted with flexibility to the members’ wishes with the purpose of having topics for discussions. These discussions will create speculations and even disagreements. In this way, diversity is succeeded, as books that divide also give stimulus for interesting discussions.
“A book which is read by 10 different people becomes 10 different books”

The Book Club, since the day of its establishment in 2012, has the same few women members for practical reasons, concerning space and functional as well, as all members have the chance of
expressing themselves.

Our Club has offered “knowledge” but mostly, has created “lifetime relationships”.

We wish to thank the Co-Ordinator of the European Programmes, Mrs Sandy Vamvaka, and the
Co- Ordinators of the Book Club, Mrs Froso Papadopoulou and Mrs Vivi Kolovou.

Also, the members who have kept the Book Club “alive” with their participation.
